Frequently Asked Questions
If you can't find the answer to your question here, please contact Children Today on 01244 335622.
Q: How can Children Today help me?
A: Children Today provide funding for specialised equipment and aids for children and young people with disabilities. If your child needs a special piece of equipment you can apply for a grant towards the costs.
Q: Who can apply for a grant?
A: We will only assist with the purchase of equipment for individuals, not groups, schools, clubs or societies. Applications will only be accepted in the name of the person for whom the equipment is required, their parent or legal guardian.
Q: Are grants means tested?
A: No, we understand that disability brings additional expenses and look at each application sympathetically.
Q: What kind of equipment meets your criteria?
A: We support applications for equipment that is going to improve and enhance a child’s quality of life or independence. Financial assistance does not extend towards the purchase or upkeep of motor vehicles, building extensions, non-specialised adaptations, travel expenses or holidays.
Q: How do I apply for a grant?
A: Simply call us on 01244 335622 to discuss your needs and request a grant application form. Once you have received the form, you will be requested to:
• Obtain a reference from someone who works with your child in a professional capacity (occupational therapist, teacher, social worker, doctor, etc)
• Provide a pro forma invoice or quotation from the supplier of the equipment
• Provide some basic financial information
Simply return the application form along with the supporting information to Children Today.
Q: How long will it be before I know whether I will get a grant?
A: When we receive your application it goes before our grants review panel who discuss each individual case and decide what action needs to be taken. Provided you have given us all the information requested we aim to let you know the outcome of your application as quickly as possible.
Q: Do you fund computer equipment and software?
A: We do not fund computers or computer software independently. All enquiries first pass through another charity called the Aidis Trust who will assess each child. If he or she falls within their criteria, Aidis will contact Children Today for joint funding. If you require an application form, please contact Aidis directly on 0808 800 0009.
Q: Can I apply for a grant retrospectively?
A: No, if you have already purchased the equipment we cannot be of assistance.
Q: How often can I apply for funding?
A: You can apply for one piece of equipment every 12 months.
Q: What if I have more than one child who is disabled and each needs an item of specialised equipment?
A: Please request an application form for each child.
Q: What is the maximum age for people applying for grants?
A: We will provide funding for equipment up to their 25th birthday.
