About the Author & Illustrator
MARC BRATCHER was born in 1972 with cerebral palsy. When he was very young, he used a walking frame to get around but mostly crawled for the first 10 years of his life. Crawling through the house and garden, Marc had a very unique perspective on nature and the world around him and his many adventures helped shape his imagination.
In 1991, Marc gained a place at Oxford University to read Modern History, where, by his own admission, he spent far too much time on the river, reading and writing stories. Since then, he has been in a powered wheelchair all his life, but rather than seeing it as a form of limitation, he has always seen it as a vehicle of liberation. He has always written for pleasure and has had, in his words, the most unexpected and biggest adventure of all, that of marriage and raising a family of his own.
KORKY PAUL was born in Harare Zimbabwe. He enjoyed a wild and privileged childhood in the African bush veldt. He studied Fine Arts at Durban Art School, South Africa and Film Animation at CalArts, California.
Korky began his career in advertising before becoming an illustrator of children’s books.
He is renowned for illustrating Winnie and Wilbur series, written by Valerie Thomas, with sales of over 10 million. Winnie is very clever; she speaks 45 languages!
His works can be recognised by his wonderfully anarchic, unconventional yet detailed and finely crafted scenes and figures. Known only to himself as the ‘World’s Greatest Portrait Artist – and Winnikin wunderkind. Korky regularly visits schools promoting his passion for drawing.
He is one of the 20% hardcore elite still scribbling with Pen ‘n Ink on Paper. Winner of Supporter of the Year for Summertown Stars Football Club. He is a patron of Pegasus Theatre, ARCh, Reading Quest and The Stratford Literary Festival. Korky works in Oxford, lives in Greece.
This is just one of a series of online storytelling sessions we are hosting for children featuring themes about disability, to help promote inclusivity, boost self-confidence and inspire young readers and hopeful authors or illustrators to be! To view our other upcoming events, click here.
